The story takes place in the remote Yakut primal forest of Siberia, where four members of a geological exploration team—Sergei (Yevgeni Urbansky), Andrei (Vasili Livanov), Danya (Tatyana Samojlova), and Sabinin (Innokenti Smoktunovsky)—are searching for valuable diamond deposits. In the vast primal forest, finding a small deposit is incredibly difficult. After working tirelessly for several days without success, the team members become disheartened. However, at this critical juncture, Danya accidentally uncovers a diamond, suggesting that the deposit is nearby. The exploration team maps the site, preparing to return to headquarters, when suddenly a fierce fire erupts in the forest. Amidst the smoke and flames, they pay a heavy price to protect the map.
