For sweet love, Matt (played by Josh Hartnett) once had dreamy aspirations, but repeated failures in romance have left him utterly disheartened by women, those troublesome and strange beings. After being cruelly dumped once again, a heartbroken Matt makes an incredibly heavy decision that all men can relate to—abstaining for 40 days. During these 40 days away from women, Matt hopes to focus on self-improvement and ultimately become an excellent young man with no desires. As the abstinence makes Matt feel refreshed, a beautiful girl named Erica (played by Shannyn Sossamon) enters his life. Although he is utterly captivated by Erica, Matt does not forget his initial vow, especially with a group of friends around him eager to see him fail.
