A murder case leads banker Andy (Tim Robbins) to be wrongly imprisoned, accused of murdering his wife and her lover, which results in a life sentence. His first appearance in Shawshank prison catches the attention of the prison "boss" Red (Morgan Freeman), who looks at him differently. Red helps him acquire a rock hammer and a poster of a female movie star, and they become close friends. Soon, Andy showcases his talents in prison, becoming the librarian and using his financial knowledge to help the prison warden evade taxes, attracting the warden's attention. He is recruited to help the warden launder money. By chance, he learns that a new inmate can testify to clear him of the murder charge. With a glimmer of hope, Andy approaches the warden for assistance in overturning his conviction. The cunning and hypocritical warden pretends to agree but secretly has the thief killed, extinguishing Andy's only hope of legal release. Frustrated, Andy does not despair; on a stormy night, a decades-old escape plan leads him to self-redemption and freedom! His old friend Red, inspired by him, also bravely heads towards freedom. This film received 10 Oscar nominations in 1995, as well as multiple nominations for the Golden Globe and Saturn Awards.
