This documentary will present the biography of one of the most magnificent species on the North American continent, an incredible, woolly beast that plays a central role in many thrilling, mythic, and even heartbreaking stories. In these stories, the buffalo provoke much reflection. In the shockingly rapid wave of extinction at the end of the 19th century, the last remaining large herds of buffalo were brutally slaughtered, and when this once-mighty creature was suddenly reduced to just a few hundred, Americans had to come to terms with their ability to drive a species to the brink of extinction.
However, if the story of the buffalo represents the most dramatic display of our capacity to destroy the natural world, it also provides compelling evidence that we have the ability to bring a species back from the edge of extinction. The least-known part of American buffalo history is what Americans did to make amends after realizing they had nearly caused the extinction of this animal. Today, there are over 350,000 buffalo in America, most of which are descendants of 77 animals from five initial herds in the early 20th century. This story—never before told on television—is as dramatic and gripping as the tale of the buffalo's demise and is filled with unforgettable characters.
Directed and executive produced by Ken Burns, written by Dayton Duncan, with production by Julie Dunfey and Burns, "American Buffalo" is set to air on PBS on October 16 and 17, 2023 (duration 4 hours).
