In 1967, in the Congo's Motaba River Valley in Africa, a sudden disease ravaged an American mercenary camp, with the death toll continuing to rise. After a military doctor extracted blood samples from infected individuals, the entire camp was destroyed by a bombing, and the white-faced monkeys in the nearby woods emitted alarming cries... Until the 1990s, a young American captured a small white-faced monkey in Zaire, Africa, and brought it back to the U.S. to sell. Unable to meet the buyer's demands, the young man released the monkey, and soon after, a new disease spread in Cedar Creek, San Francisco. Colonel Sam Daniels (played by Dustin Hoffman), a military doctor from the American Infectious Disease Institute, received the news and immediately began research and treatment with his wife (played by Rene Russo) and colleagues. Due to the highly contagious nature of the disease, the government urgently deployed troops to seal off the town, and anyone attempting to escape was to be killed on sight.
