Petra (played by Margit Carstensen) is a somewhat renowned female painter who has been married for many years and has raised a daughter with her husband. However, over time, Petra finds herself increasingly disdainful of her hypocritical and indifferent husband. The stifling nature of her marriage leads her to choose divorce. Through the introduction of her friend Sidonie (played by Katrin Schaake), Petra meets an American woman named Karin (played by Hanna Schygulla). The two, sharing similar interests, quickly become attracted to each other and begin their cohabitation. Petra supports Karin and actively introduces her into the world of fashion modeling; however, Karin sees Petra's affection as a form of bondage and ultimately chooses to leave. With Karin gone, Petra's life descends into chaos, gradually teetering on the edge of collapse.
