In 1945, as World War II was nearing its end, the heart of the Third Reich, Berlin, had turned into ruins under the fierce assault of the Allies. After a brief exchange of gunfire, thousands of Soviet soldiers poured into this decayed city. The German civilians, hiding in bunkers, were forced to emerge under the threat of rifles, and the sins of men were transferred to women. Countless women were raped, and not a single Soviet officer stepped up to stop it. She (played by Nina Hoss) is one of the many humiliated German women, with her husband far away on the front lines, uncertain of his fate. In fear and helplessness, she can only endure humiliation time and again. She submits herself to a Soviet officer, hoping to survive in this terrible environment... This film is adapted from the diary of a German female journalist of the same name.
