Berlin is guarded by two angels, one being Cassiel, who observes human suffering with indifference, and the other being Damiel (Bruno Ganz), who is often moved by human misery. They wander throughout the city in their flowing angel robes, listening to people's prayers and silently observing their inner worlds. The troubles of circus performer Marion (Solveig Dommartin) draw Damiel's sympathy, as the circus is poorly managed and on the brink of closing down, leaving Marion deeply troubled. This angelic performer stirs Damiel's human emotions, prompting him to become mortal in pursuit of a fulfilling relationship. This film won the Best Director Award at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.
