Helen, a writer (played by Anne Bancroft), lives in New York and is often frustrated by her inability to purchase rare books she needs. By chance, she discovers an advertisement from a British used bookstore in a magazine and decides to write a list of books she’s looking for to the owner of Marks & Co. located at 84 Charing Cross Road in London. Soon, Marks & Co. responds with an unimaginable surprise: she finds the rare books she has been searching for and receives sincere recommendations regarding rare editions from Frank (played by Anthony Hopkins). Thus, two book lovers begin a 20-year correspondence. Helen not only seeks rare books from Frank but also shares her reading experiences with him. They exchange literary views and critique works by famous authors. Frank travels extensively to acquire rare books for Helen, while she sends delicious food from America to alleviate the food scarcity faced by the bookstore staff due to the UK's rationing system. Through their continuous letter exchange, they become spiritual friends. Helen has always wanted to visit Frank in London but has been unable to do so due to various unforeseen circumstances.
