Pierre (played by Hardy Krüger) is a former French Air Force pilot who loses his memory after his plane crashes during battle. After the war, he returns to Paris in his thirties, living a monotonous life with his girlfriend Madeleine (played by Nicole Courcel), but he is troubled by amnesia and post-war syndrome. One day, he meets a little girl, Sibyl (played by Patricia Gozzi), who has been sent to a convent by her father. Upon learning that Sibyl has been abandoned by her parents, Pierre begins to impersonate her father every weekend to take her out from the convent. They play together by the Seine, sharing their own secret language and rituals; Sibyl's innocence seems to bring sunshine into Pierre's troubled life, slowly healing his emotional wounds. However, this pure friendship raises suspicion, misunderstanding, and criticism from outsiders, leading to complaints from the convent and police involvement. On a peaceful Christmas night, Pierre and Sibyl cuddle by the riverside, unaware of the dangers lurking in the darkness... This film won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 1963.
