In the 1980s, 19-year-old Kitamachi Kanta (played by Mirai Moriyama), who had a gloomy childhood, lives a life of despair and debauchery. He dropped out of school at an early age, ran away from home, has an irritable personality, is self-abased and shameless, telling all kinds of lies to avoid paying rent. He squanders all the money he earns working at a bar, and reading is perhaps his only hobby. In the factory, he becomes friends with the handsome and smart newcomer, Masakazu Kutsukabe (played by Kengo Kora). Although they come from completely different backgrounds, Kanta, who is somewhat socially withdrawn, begins to taste the beauty of friendship. With Masakazu's support, Kanta also gathers the courage to ask out the bookstore girl he has admired for a long time, Yasuko Sakurai (played by Atsuko Maeda). The three young men and women cross societal barriers to play and laugh together.
