A biographical film about the Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang, but many depictions are inconsistent with historical facts. The elder uncle, who had sung opera for most of his life, did not wear red during the Empress Dowager's birthday due to the funeral at home and was bestowed with a paper shackles. Young Mei Lanfang carried a letter left by him before his death and began studying opera and life under the famous Peking Opera performer Shisan Yan (Wang Xueqi), who had close ties with the Mei family. Ten years later, Mei Lanfang (Yu Shaoqun) emerged in the Peking Opera scene, hoping to maintain a life of integrity in his art. Qiu Rubai (Sun Honglei), a director of the overseas judicial bureau with deep insights into dramatic art, was filled with grievances against traditional Peking Opera. However, after watching Mei Lanfang's performance, he was unable to contain his excitement and penned an encouraging letter with suggestions. Mei Lanfang, who also wanted to innovate his performances, was very grateful to Qiu Rubai. Through their correspondence and deep conversations, Mei Lanfang's understanding and renewal of Peking Opera deepened, and he gained a lifelong pure friendship with Qiu Rubai. However, this led to disagreements between Mei Lanfang and Shisan Yan. Encouraged by onlookers, they decided to compete, and Mei Lanfang achieved overwhelming success, ushering in his own era. Mei Lanfang's success can be attributed not only to his extraordinary insight and Qiu Rubai's constant encouragement in art but also to the generous financial support from the wealthy banker "Sixth Master" Feng Zigang (Ying Da). Later, Mei Lanfang (Leon Lai) married Fu Zhifang (Chen Hong) and attempted to lead a life of a soulful woman on stage while being an ordinary man off stage, but it was destined to be as difficult as wearing "paper shackles": After meeting the popular male performer Meng Xiaodong (Zhang Ziyi), he formed a spiritual couple with her but regrettably passed each other by. During the anti-Japanese period, to uphold his integrity, he grew a beard and painfully parted from his beloved stage. His journey to shine on the international stage with a performance in the United States was also fraught with challenges.
