In the autumn of 1934, due to the mistakes of the leftist opportunist line, the fifth anti-encirclement and suppression campaign failed, and the main force of the Red Army was forced to withdraw from the Jiangxi base area, beginning the long march of twenty-five thousand miles. At that time, the enemy launched assaults on the central base area from all directions, and the central Soviet region fell. Comrade Chen Yi, injured in his leg, did not follow the main force in the retreat and instead stayed with the remaining comrades to engage in guerrilla warfare in the mountains. They endured great hardships, and by the time they reached the mountainous area of Meiling in southern Jiangxi, their force had dwindled to less than a hundred men. They hid in the deep mountains and dense forests, living in extreme conditions, enduring wind and rain, and leading a primitive life. Despite the harsh conditions, they persisted in conducting guerrilla warfare. At this time, the underground party organization was destroyed, and they were completely cut off from the Central Committee. The environment became increasingly grim, the struggles grew more difficult, and the soldiers' morale sank, with some even leaving the team to descend the mountain. However, Comrade Chen Yi remained full of confidence. He insisted on treating the soldiers and officers correctly, addressing mistakes made by comrades properly, and uniting all possible forces. After finally overcoming the difficult three years, they saved the revolutionary flame. At the same time, Japanese imperialism occupied the three northeastern provinces, while Chiang Kai-shek implemented traitorous policies, deepening the disaster for the Chinese nation. Comrade Chen Yi was filled with righteous indignation; in the mountains and forests, he raised the banner of resistance against Japan, mobilizing the masses and waging unrelenting struggles. In the winter of 1936, with the peaceful resolution of the Xi'an Incident, Chiang Kai-shek, disregarding the interests of the nation and the country, launched a frenzied attack on our southern guerrilla forces. Due to the betrayal of a traitor, Meiling was besieged, and when faced with almost certain death, Comrade Chen Yi, undaunted, wrote the famous poem "Three Chapters of Meiling," boldly proclaiming: "Going to the spring platform to summon the old troops, with a hundred thousand flags battling against the underworld!" After the "July 7" Incident, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party cooperated again. Although Comrade Chen Yi was far from the Central Committee, with his political foresight, he resolutely descended the mountain to negotiate with the Kuomintang. From then on, the arduous guerrilla war came to an end, paving the way for the gathering of southern guerrilla forces to form the mighty New Fourth Army, heading to the anti-Japanese battlefield and creating favorable conditions.
