Kazuo Kudo (played by Masahiro Higashide) and Kenji Sakamoto (played by Shunsuke Daito) are longtime friends. Kenji is a high school teacher, while Kazuo is an editor at a publishing house. Kazuo seems to be experiencing issues both mentally and physically. After a diagnosis from a psychiatrist, he is found to have autonomic nervous system disorder, and there is no specific cure for this condition; only consistent exercise can alleviate the symptoms. Therefore, Kazuo returns to his hometown of Hakodate with his wife Junko (played by Nao) to start a daily running routine as a form of rehabilitation. However, Kazuo soon realizes that the only time he feels happy is while running; everything else in life, including his relationship with his wife, leaves him feeling disheartened. One day, while running, Kazuo meets a boy named Akira Koizumi, and somehow, they begin to run together.
