In the early 1960s Hong Kong, Mr. Liu (played by Zhang Guozhu) was originally a writer, but due to "bad luck," he had to make a living by writing subpar martial arts novels and erotic literature, a reality vastly different from the life he once pursued. The necessity of life left Mr. Liu frustrated, leading him to drink away his days and nights in an attempt to numb himself and escape reality. Although not young anymore, Mr. Liu is still like a floating weed, lacking stability and constantly moving from place to place. Initially, while renting a small room, he met his landlady's daughter, Sima Li (played by Guo Shanhang), who was only seventeen and often tempted him. After the landlady discovered this, he was forced to move out. Many other women came and went in his life, including his confidante Zhang Lili (played by Jiang Meiyi) and young dancer Yang Lu (played by Jiang Zuman)... How will Mr. Liu save himself from the intoxication of sex and alcohol? The film is adapted from the novel of the same name "The Alcoholic" by Hong Kong writer Liu Yichang.
