A pair of brothers living in Alaska, Miles and Liam, are deep in debt. To get out of their predicament, older brother Miles convinces younger brother Liam and his girlfriend Lauren to create a ruse—he will venture alone into the Alaskan mountains, returning after ten days, and Liam will sell this gripping story to the media for profit. To make the event seem realistic, Liam and Miles stage a fight, leading him to a cave that Miles has pre-arranged. Bruised and battered, Liam returns to report his brother missing, prompting a citywide search and drawing the attention of the police. Lauren's father Jim investigates deeply, only to discover that things are far from simple—Miles has serious debt problems. Liam's diary documenting the planned deception also betrays them, and while in custody, he is severely punished by Miles's creditor, Joe. The agreed-upon time passes, but Miles has not returned, and Liam and Lauren begin to worry. When Miles is found barely alive, Liam and Lauren decide to go through with their original plan to sell the story. During a moment of conflict, Joe takes Miles hostage to threaten Liam; in the ensuing chase, Jim dies, and Lauren kills Joe in self-defense. Lauren concocts another story for the media, while Liam struggles to accept reality.
