With the arrival of summer vacation, a third-grade student named Masao (played by Yusuke Sekikawa), who lost his father at a young age, is now living with his grandmother and finds the summer vacation particularly boring. He takes out a letter from his mother sent from afar and plans to go to Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, to visit her alone. The neighbor lady (played by Kayoko Kishimoto) discovers this and decides to help Masao fulfill his wish. She gives him some money for travel expenses and arranges for her idle husband Kikujiro (played by Takeshi Kitano) to accompany Masao on the journey to find his mother. However, on the first day, Kikujiro loses all the money given by his wife, so the two have to walk to Aichi. After hitchhiking and causing quite a bit of trouble along the way, Kikujiro finally brings Masao to his mother's house, but the little boy feels very disappointed. On the way back, Kikujiro tries hard to comfort him, and they spend a very enjoyable time together, and just like that, summer passes.
