During the Anti-Japanese War, General Yang Jingyu, commander of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, was surrounded by Japanese forces. He ordered the main force to break through, while he stayed on the mountain with only three soldiers—Chang Huaizhong, Tang Fulu, and Zhu Ershiba—to attract the bulk of the enemy troops. The defection of the 29th Division commander Cheng Bin caused heavy losses to the breakout forces, leaving General Yang immensely saddened. Upon returning home, Cheng was scolded by his mother, and his wife angrily executed him with a gun. Chang Huaizhong's lover, Zhou Fenglan, climbed the mountain to deliver supplies to the general and reunited with Chang. The Japanese tried to lure General Yang with high positions and wealth, but he vehemently rejected them. As the Japanese attacked, Chang Huaizhong and Tang Fulu were killed, and Fenglan perished with the enemy in a single destiny. The heads of the martyrs were hung on the city wall, and many civilians were slaughtered for bowing to the heroes. The main force of the Anti-Japanese United Army sent people to rescue General Yang but failed to breach the Japanese blockade. A civilian who brought supplies to the general was also killed by the Japanese. General Yang and Zhu Ershiba finally broke through the enemy’s blockade, but Zhu, badly wounded, did not want to burden General Yang and chose to end his life by a bullet, asking the general to use his flesh to stave off hunger and keep the anti-Japanese banner flying. General Yang, filled with sorrow, buried his comrade’s body. He crawled down the mountain with his exhausted body. Hunger struck ruthlessly, forcing General Yang to pull out cotton and swallow it mixed with snow. Once again, he was betrayed by national traitors and fell into the Japanese encirclement. Sanmu urged General Yang to surrender with great respect. General Yang, righteous and indignant, harshly rebuked the enemy, willing to spill his blood for the motherland and not stand with the Japanese. Japanese bullets rained down on General Yang; he was shot thirteen times but still glared at the enemy, standing unwavering. Sanmu was impressed, and facing such a strong opponent, he removed his military cap and bowed respectfully... To dispel their doubts, the cruel Japanese dissected General Yang's body. They found that his stomach was like that of an ordinary person, but unlike others, it was empty and contained only cotton and grass...
