Władysław Strzemiński was a beloved university professor and a renowned avant-garde painter. When Stalin proposed "socialist realism," which was embraced as a guideline by the Polish authorities and demanded compliance, he stood on the side of dissent. As a result, he was not only stripped of his teaching position and artist identity but also had his right to a livelihood trampled.
