Larisa (Alisa Frejndlikh) has a very beautiful appearance. She was born with a silver spoon but unfortunately, her family has fallen on hard times, and they now live a hand-to-mouth existence. Larisa has two sisters, both of whom are already married. Larisa is her mother’s last hope, and her mother wants her to marry a wealthy man so that they can live a prosperous life again. Larisa falls in love with a man named Baratov (Nikita Mikhalkov), while a postal clerk, Karandiev (Andrey Myagkov), is also fervently pursuing her. Initially, Larisa and Baratov's relationship develops smoothly, but then disaster strikes when Baratov goes bankrupt, after which he chooses to leave.
