Laurel (played by Julianne Moore) is a highly experienced detective with 23 years on the job, and her case-solving abilities have never lost to any male colleagues. However, she has a secret: she is a lesbian, and to protect her position in the police department, she must keep this secret under tight wraps. One day, at an event, Laurel meets a woman named Daisy (played by Elliot Page), a mechanic. Despite their significant differences in status and age, they are drawn to each other and eventually become a couple. Unfortunately, Laurel discovers that she has cancer and doesn't have much time left. She plans to transfer her pension to Daisy's name to ensure that, after her death, Daisy can still have her house, but Laurel's application is quickly denied.
