One day, the father (played by Teruyuki Kagawa) suddenly visits Asayo (played by Eita) and informs him that a previously unknown aunt has passed away, asking him to tidy up her house. In a dilapidated shack by the river, Asayo gradually begins to understand what kind of life his father’s aunt, Matsuko Kawajiri (played by Miki Nakatani), truly had. As a child, Matsuko often dreamed beautiful dreams like Snow White. She later became a modest middle school teacher, but was dismissed due to an unfounded misunderstanding. Afterward, she cohabited with a writer who chose to commit suicide out of love for her, leaving behind the words: "I’m sorry for being human." This incident greatly impacted Matsuko; she then lived with the writer's rival in career until she succumbed to the temptation of the rival's wife, only to be abandoned. She became a bathhouse girl and even went to prison for murder; however, whether intentionally or not, she never gave up hope for life. No matter how shattered her existence became, she instinctively continued to survive, and this very act of survival was enough to move anyone, including Asayo.
