Adapted from the American novel "The Postman Always Rings Twice" by James M. Cain, completed in 1941, under the filming conditions where the script had to be censored by the fascist government, Visconti turned this story of adulterous murder into a work filled with an aura of desperate fate. The film features a female protagonist from a poor background, who is forced to marry a fat and vulgar hotel owner. She completely lacks the courage to escape her life of being kept (and occasionally humiliated), while the male protagonist is a wandering unemployed man who succumbs to the temptation of the female lead, committing a fatal crime. The harsh social conditions clearly highlight the fateful bond of the two characters, who have no choice but to come together. As a first-time director, Visconti already exhibits the most significant characteristic of his later works: a delicate portrayal of the characters' entangled erotic psychology. In the moments of shared meals, both genders gaze at each other's bodies, where Visconti juxtaposes the harsh material life with the unrestrained inner lust, compensating for the brevity of the adulterous process.
