In Europe, where the shadows of war have not yet dissipated, translator and intellectual Ester (Ingrid Thulin) travels by train back to Sweden with her sister Anna (Gunnel Lindblom) and Anna's son Johan. During the journey, Ester, who suffers from advanced lung disease, has an episode, and the three of them get off in a small town where they cannot communicate and check into an old inn. Ester unintentionally seems to want to spy on Anna's life, trying to express affection for her but not knowing how, while Anna believes Ester is her burden. One night, Anna goes out and meets a bartender; upon returning to the inn, she describes her fantasy of sex and excitement to Ester, provoking a strong reaction from her. Subsequently, she has sex with the bartender right under Ester's nose, leading to Ester's explosion, and long-buried memories mixed with jealousy and conflict between the two come to light.
