Frankie (Jack McElhone) moves to Scotland with his mother Liz (Emily Mortimer) and grandmother. At nine years old, he is a deaf child, smart and understanding, full of anticipation for his father. He often writes letters to his sailor father and hangs maps of the ship where his father works. But he doesn't know that everything is a kind lie from his mother, who has fabricated his father's existence; in fact, they have moved around to escape his father's brutal domestic violence. Each "reply from father" is written by Liz, so as not to upset her son. Frankie learns that his father's ship is about to dock and wants to meet him. Liz, not expecting such a ship to exist, cannot bring herself to tell her son the whole truth and, with the help of a friend, finds a stranger (Gerard Butler) to impersonate his father, who takes a liking to charming Frankie. The three of them get along well, and just as the "husband" is about to leave, Liz reveals to him that Frankie's deafness is due to the violence inflicted by her real husband. There seems to be an unspoken connection between them as well. Liz rejects her dying husband David's request to see their son and soon tells Frankie that his father has passed away. Liz manages to write to her son, only to find that smart Frankie has figured everything out…
