However, Jiali is unwilling to be like her brother, forced to abandon her lover Tan Weiqing (played by Hu Yinmeng), and accepts the marriage imposed by her father. She resolutely leaves home and marries her lover Cheng Dewei (played by Mao Xuewei) in the rapidly modernizing city of Taipei. However, during the economic boom of the 70s and 80s in Taiwan, business competition becomes fierce, and Dewei gradually becomes entangled in a world of money, socializing, and indulgence, ultimately losing himself. Feeling increasingly lonely and empty, Jiali receives a phone call one day informing her that Dewei has drowned by the beach. She rushes to the seaside to confront a body she is unsure is her husband. Years later, Jiali reunites with Tan Weiqing, who has returned from abroad for a performance, and they reminisce about the past in a café.
