The story takes place in the winter of 1820, aboard a whaling ship named the Essex, sailing through the vast South Pacific. What none of the crew members realized was that beneath the waves lurked a whale with high intelligence and a fierce desire for revenge, preparing to carry out its vengeance plan. Soon, the whaling ship faced relentless attacks from the whale, and the fragile vessel quickly became shattered under the impact of the massive creature, resulting in heavy casualties among the crew. A group of survivors, including first mate Owen (played by Chris Hemsworth), crew member Nickerson (Tom Holland), and Matthew (Cillian Murphy), squeezed into a small boat and drifted at sea for 90 days. During these 90 days, scenes of hell on earth played out on the small boat.
