The film tells the story of a remote village in Ningxia's Xihai Guo, which has faced nine years of drought in ten. An elderly Muslim man loses his wife, and he and his son decide to slaughter the old cow that has accompanied him for over a decade on the day of his wife's memorial to honor her spirit. In the following days, the elderly man and his son take great care of the cow, showing their reluctance to part with it and expressing their longing for the deceased. Three days before the memorial, the cow sees the knife that will slaughter it in the water it drinks and begins to stop eating and drinking, seeking to end its life with a clean heart. Subsequently, the elderly man falls into contemplation about life and death.
