The story takes place in America in 1909. Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) and Nettie (Akosua Busia) are sisters bound by deep affection. Despite facing the harsh realities as Black women, they find joy in each other's company until Celie is forced to marry a Black man named Albert (Danny Glover). Albert is abusive, treating Celie as little more than a maid, while he genuinely loves an actress named Shug (Margaret Avery) who is far away. Nettie comes to accompany Celie, but Albert kicks her out of the house after a failed attempt to assault her, and Celie loses all contact with Nettie. In their painful lives, the women struggle and resist, but ultimately succumb to discrimination and power. The arrival of Shug changes everything; she is independent and strong, never fearing her identity as a woman, and her optimism gives Celie the courage to rebel. Finally, she leaves Albert, starts her own successful sewing business, and then one day, Nettie and her happy family reappear in Celie's life, in the midst of purple flowers.
