The time is 1918, and China has endured great hardships, with continuous warfare, internal warlords vying for power, and external aggressors invading, leaving the country's fate uncertain. In Changsha, Hunan, a group of passionate young patriots, including Mao Zedong (played by Bao Jianfeng), Cai Heshen (played by Tao Shuai), and Xiao Zisheng (played by Qian Feng), organize the New People’s Study Society to discuss the future of their homeland. To raise funds for studying in France, Mao and his friends journey north to Peking University to seek their mentor Yang Changji.
