Adapted from the novella of the same name by the “King of Short Stories” Maupassant, "Beautiful Friend." George Duroy (played by Robert Pattinson), a veteran, arrives in Paris alone from Africa after his service and lives a hard life working odd jobs at the railway bureau. By chance, he meets an old comrade and, with his help, gets a job as an editor at "Le Journal de la Vie Française," where he strives to become an important writer for the "Walter Group" and participates in treachery plots. With his handsome appearance and some tricks to please women, he moves among wealthy ladies, including Clotilde (played by Christina Ricci), Madeleine (played by Uma Thurman), and Madame Walter (played by Kristin Scott Thomas), all of whom become his stepping stones. He shamelessly uses women to rise to power, engages in speculative ventures, and gradually works his way into high society. Ultimately, he deceives the newspaper owner Walter’s daughter, Susan (played by Holliday Grainger), marries her to become the newspaper’s chief editor, and successfully secures wealth, power, and fame for a promising future.
