The story begins in the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty. After spending over a decade in the palace as a quiet consort by the side of Emperor Taizong, Wu Meiniang finally encountered an opportunity that made the emperor take notice of her. As Taizong valued her more, she gradually became familiar with Crown Prince Li Zhi, and both were deeply impressed by and felt goodwill towards each other. After the death of Emperor Taizong, Wu Meiniang, following palace rules, became a nun at the Gan Ye Temple outside Chang'an City. Unwilling to live her life in such a manner, she created a chance to return to the palace when Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi visited the temple to pay respects. With the birth of her son, she rose from a palace maid to a zhaoyi (secondary consort), and then from zhaoyi to empress, using her unique wisdom and courage to eliminate obstacles, defeat rivals, and firmly establish her position in the harem. After consolidating her status, Empress Wu began assisting her husband in governance. She decisively eliminated dissent and reclaimed power for the empress's palace. During this time, she proposed twelve political reforms known historically as the "Twelve Suggestions," which Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi praised and sanctioned for implementation. The couple governed the country together, often referred to as the "Twin Saints." When Gaozong became weak and ill, unable to attend court, Empress Wu took on the heavy responsibilities of ruling alone, showcasing her remarkable governing abilities. The Tang Empire rose with unprecedented strength in the global arena. After Gaozong's death, with the court in disarray, she decisively deposed the incompetent and selfish Zhongzong Li Xian, and with a commanding presence, swiftly quelled a rebellion originating from the royal family. She corrected the opposition forces with decisive measures, improving the situation in the country day by day, and the people increasingly supported this courageous and insightful woman. To preserve the empire, Empress Wu followed the will of the heavens and the people's expectations, ascending the throne as emperor. Thus, in Chinese history, there arose the first and only female emperor. After assuming the throne, Empress Wu executed ambitious reforms and achieved significant political results. She reformed the imperial examination system, initiated palace examinations, and employed talent regardless of background. She established the martial examination to train capable military personnel; she recognized and utilized capable individuals, filling the court with talent; she vigorously promoted agriculture nationwide, reduced taxes, and prioritized enriching the people to strengthen the country; she faced foreign threats without retreat, successfully securing the borders; she respected Buddhism and Taoism, calming disputes; she held herself accountable for errors, championed the exoneration of the wrongfully imprisoned, rescuing a substantial number of capable officials, including Di Renjie, from corrupt officials... Ultimately, as her life drew to a close, she did not allow her descendants to inherit the throne, but instead returned power to the Li Tang dynasty. She left behind an unmarked monument for future generations...
