In October 1944, at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, Polish and Hungarian Jews working at the crematorium are plotting a revolt to destroy the crematory ovens, with a Polish man nicknamed "Moishe" (played by Steve Buscemi) coordinating the efforts. Hungarian Jewish doctor Miklós (played by Allan Corduner) receives special treatment from guard Muthsfield (played by Harvey Keitel) due to his notable achievements in the field of twin studies. He is unwilling to watch as Hungarian Hoffman (played by David Arquette) suffocates a fellow inmate who attempted suicide, leading to conflict between them. The nearby women's prison's secret supply of explosives to the crematorium is exposed, resulting in the torture and deaths of Tina (played by Mira Sorvino) and Losa (played by Natasha Lyonne). As Hoffman anxiously awaits the moment to begin the revolt, he discovers a barely alive girl in the pile of bodies in the gas chamber. Should he save her? Will it disrupt the plan for revolt? Hoffman and his fellow inmates are at a loss... The film won the Freedom of Expression Award from the American Film Institute.
