The story takes place in June 1940 in Paris, France, where single mother Odile (Emmanuelle Béart) is anxiously caring for her two children, Philippe (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet) and Cassie (Clémence Meyer), as the threat of war looms closer. The inevitable arrives when the sound of gunfire echoes through the streets, prompting this strong mother to join the fleeing crowd without hesitation. For the children, this long journey holds little meaning, and they struggle to understand their mother's decision to leave home behind. The German planes carry out a brutal bombing on the fleeing group. Although Odile and her children escape this disaster, all their belongings go up in flames. Just when the three of them, feeling lost and helpless, do not know what to do, a boy named Ivan (Gaspard Ulliel) appears before them.
