This film tells the story of Mr. Z, the leader of the opposition party, who is assassinated during a speech in a Southern European country (reminiscent of Greece) where a military regime has established a dictatorial system. The government authorities announce that he died in a tragic car accident, but the public, unable to believe this explanation, strongly demands the truth be uncovered. The prosecutor, upon hearing various signs from Mr. Z's colleagues, decides to resist political pressure and pursue the investigation, ultimately discovering that it was a planned political murder, implicating many prominent political figures. However, those involved in the case later find themselves either exiled, sentenced to prison, or killed. Costa-Gavras gained fame with this film, sparking a new wave of political thriller cinema.
