The story takes place during World War II. To escape the war, the strong mother Cecila (played by Sophia Loren) leaves their hometown of Rome with her 13-year-old daughter Rosetta (played by Eleonora Brown) and temporarily settles in the remote town of Scerro. There, Cecila meets a young man named Michele (played by Jean Paul Belmondo), who is preparing to become a doctor. Michele is a romantically inclined man who loves literature. He teaches Rosetta to read and write poetry, and over time, Rosetta falls in love with him. However, it is clear that Michele's attention is always focused on Cecila. To help Cecila obtain food, Michele visits a friend's house, only to encounter a German officer there, who strongly condemns Michele's refusal to go to war and intends to forcibly take him away.
