In 1760s Brittany, France, the talented young painter Marianne (played by Noémie Merlant) receives a commission to secretly paint the portrait of the wealthy young heiress Héloïse (played by Adèle Haenel) before her marriage. The two are isolated on a remote island, where the painter quietly observes Héloïse’s every move during the day, only to indulge in painting her at night.
