"Eisenstein in Guanajuato" tells the story of Sergei Eisenstein, the father of world montage, during an extraordinary period in Mexico. The film is highly experimental and visually impactful, marking the pinnacle of British director Peter Greenaway's work, and was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival. In 1931, Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein (played by Elmer Bäck) travels to Guanajuato to shoot his new film "¡Viva México!". There, he encounters a new culture and the local civilization's attitude toward death, discovering another side of himself. In this foreign land, filled with both joy and danger, he begins to reassess his homeland and the societal system under Stalin's rule. "The shocking ten days of Eisenstein," he describes his experiences in Guanajuato, a phrase borrowed from his classic film "Ten Days That Shook the World," a silent film about the Russian October Revolution. In this film, audiences can feel Eisenstein's experiences in Guanajuato as an adventure filled with ups and downs, much like the October Revolution. Though it covers only ten days, the film uses exaggerated editing to weave together Eisenstein's cinematic achievements and personal experiences, connecting the legendary life of the master, making it a bold and avant-garde visual attempt in biographical cinema.
