The story takes place during World War II when 350 Japanese fighter planes launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, where Captain Rockwell (played by John Wayne) and Commander Paul (played by Kirk Douglas) were stationed. This attack dealt a heavy blow to their fleet, resulting in numerous casualties, but fortunately, both Rockwell and Paul survived the bombardment. Now, the only thing they want to do is to repair the battleship as quickly as possible to avenge their fallen brothers. Meanwhile, Rockwell encounters the beautiful nurse Maggie (played by Patricia Neal), and the two quickly fall in love. Additionally, Rockwell's fractured relationship with his son Jerry (played by Brandon De Wilde) is another challenge he needs to overcome.
