Jeff (Alain Delon) is a taciturn hitman who lives in a hotel, accompanied only by a bird. He operates alone and is contracted to assassinate the owner of a club. Although the operation goes flawlessly, he is still apprehended by the police. The pianist Marily (Cathy Rosier) recognizes Jeff as the suspicious man from that day, but she chooses to cover for him, causing Jeff to have doubts. Jeff finds an intermediary to settle his payment, only to be shot and injured by the intermediary. After escaping from danger, Jeff secretly uncovers the identity of his employer, finds and kills him, but at the same time, he discovers that Marily, who initially protected him, is actually the employer's lover. With mixed feelings, Jeff confronts Marily at the club with a handgun, but is shot dead by the police who had long been lying in wait. Afterwards, the police discover that Jeff's handgun was unloaded, and the meaning of his act becomes an eternal mystery.
