Ruan Li (played by Chow Yun-fat) once participated in the Vietnam War. After the war ended, Ruan Li, despite his martial arts skills, lost his purpose and came to Hong Kong, where he became an assassin. Although he kills without remorse, Ruan Li retains a kind heart. In Hong Kong, he meets a girl named A-Lin (played by Sisters Kwan), and they fall in love. However, during a mission, A-Lin's father becomes Ruan Li's target and dies tragically. Gradually, A-Lin begins to suspect Ruan Li's true identity, and her suspicions make her the next target. Ruan Li cannot bring himself to harm A-Lin, so he takes her on a journey to escape. Along the way, A-Lin finally learns the truth about her father’s death. Heartbroken, she is filled with hatred for Ruan Li and vows to avenge her father.
