In the primordial jungle adjacent to San Francisco, Caesar (portrayed by Andy Serkis) leads his gorilla companions in establishing a carefree kingdom, until one day, the tranquility of the gorillas' homeland is once again disrupted by humans. The remaining humans in the old city are facing an energy crisis and attempt to harness power from a hydroelectric dam in the heart of the forest. Young scientist Malcolm (portrayed by Jason Clarke) tries to persuade the leader of the settlement, Dreyfus (portrayed by Gary Oldman), hoping to gain the trust and agreement of the gorilla tribe through peaceful means. However, Caesar's good ally, Koba (portrayed by Toby Kebbell), cannot rid himself of his hatred for humans and attempts to challenge Caesar's authority. Humanity and the gorillas cautiously test each other, and war becomes inevitable...
