Guy (played by Jeffrey Hunter) lost his parents at a very young age. Left all alone, he was adopted by a mixed American-Japanese family, thus gaining two brothers of American descent. Growing up in such an environment, Guy became fluent in both Japanese and English. War broke out, and due to their ancestry, Guy's parents were sent to an international internment camp, while his two brothers enlisted in the military as American citizens and were sent to fight in Europe. Due to his proficiency in Japanese, Guy was recruited by the United States Marine Corps as a translator. The U.S. military launched an assault on Saipan, which was occupied by the Japanese army, and Guy went along with the troops. Watching his friends fall one by one to the artillery fire, Guy felt immense sorrow. He requested to be sent to the Japanese army to try to persuade them to surrender, in order to avoid unnecessary casualties.
