In the latter half of the 16th century, France was in the period of the "Huguenot Wars," marked by brutal warfare between Catholics and Protestants. The court was also marked by luxury, debauchery, and corruption. In order to quell years of civil war, the Catholic French court decided to marry Princess Marguerite (Isabelle Adjani) to the Protestant leader King Henry of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil).
