In the latter half of the 16th century, France was in the period of the "Huguenot Wars," marked by brutal warfare between Catholics and Protestants. The court was also marked by luxury, debauchery, and corruption. In order to quell years of civil war, the Catholic French court decided to marry Princess Marguerite (Isabelle Adjani) to the Protestant leader King Henry of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil). On August 24, 1572, the wedding was grandly held in Paris. Just as people were immersed in the atmosphere of joy, Queen Catherine (Virna Lisi) issued orders to launch a bloody massacre against the Protestants, known in Western history as the infamous tragedy—"St. Bartholomew's Night"… The film is adapted from Alexandre Dumas's classic work and won the Best Actress award (Virna Lisi) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 as well as the Jury Prize. It also won multiple awards at the César Awards in 1995, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Costume Design.
