In the 1960s, amidst a liberating and open environment, old Ireland still maintained a rigid and conservative atmosphere. Here, all girls deemed 'fallen' were sent to the Magdalene Asylum for reform, but what awaited them was not gentle rain but endless darkness and despair. Margareth (Anne-Marie Duff) was sexually assaulted by her cousin at a family wedding; her plight went unrecognized, and she was sent away as an "unclean girl." The lively and beautiful Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone) was the object of boys' pursuits, and she paid a price for her "frivolity." Rose (Dorothy Duffy) became pregnant out of wedlock and was forced to give up her child for the sake of a so-called future. The three girls arrived at the Magdalene Asylum, unaware that it was a place of hopeless despair with no return…
