In the second half of the 19th century, technological advancements continuously drove industrial progress. In London, the invention-obsessed scientist Phileas Fogg (played by Steve Coogan) often conducts crazy experiments with transportation, although he is not recognized by the Royal Academy of Sciences and is just an amateur. His servant leaves him due to the dangerously reckless experiments. Liu Xing (played by Jackie Chan), from China, robs the Bank of England to retrieve the treasured "Jade Buddha" from his hometown. This brings an endless chase from both the British police and the Chinese criminal organization, the Black Scorpion gang, forcing him to take on the alias " Passepartout" and work as Fogg's servant. Fogg, aiming to replace the outdated president of the Academy, bets his entire fortune and future that he can travel around the world in 80 days. Passepartout believes he can use this trip to return the Buddha statue home. After they set off, they meet a passionate amateur Impressionist painter, Madeleine (played by Cécile De France), in Paris who insists on joining them. They board the "Orient Express" with differing purposes. Despite the obstacles posed by a Turkish prince (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), General Black Scorpion (played by Karen Mok), and his henchman (played by Daniel Wu), the three, fueled by their dreams, are not afraid of any hazards.
