Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett) are two close brothers who have grown up playing together, both having a strong interest in flying. They learned to pilot planes together and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II. During training, Rafe falls in love with nurse Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale) from the military hospital. To assist European countries in resisting Nazi Germany's invasion, the U.S. military decides to send an elite squad to the European continent. Rafe volunteers to fight, entrusting Evelyn to Danny's care. Soon, tragic news arrives: Rafe's plane is shot down by German forces during a dogfight, with little hope for survival. As Evelyn and Danny encourage each other through their pain, love begins to blossom between them. To their surprise, Rafe is not dead, and when the three reunite, awkwardness ensues. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor helps resolve their tension, and Rafe and Danny decide to be comrades instead of rivals.
