Walter Faber (Sam Shepard), a rational hydraulic engineer, finds himself in an unexpected situation when his plane crashes and forcibly lands in the deserts of Mexico. However, after being rescued, Walter makes an uncharacteristic decision to venture into the Mexican jungle with a German businessman he has never met to search for a friend he hasn’t been in contact with for years. Upon arriving at his friend's place, they discover that the friend has committed suicide. Walter's second journey begins on a ferry. In his mid-forties, Walter encounters the charming young girl Sabine (Julie Delpy). Though they seem to belong to two different worlds—Sabine with her passion for art and Walter with his expertise in science and technology—an uncontrollable affection begins to blossom between them, and they decide to travel together to southern Europe. By chance, Walter learns that Sabine is actually the daughter of his former girlfriend, Hanna (Barbara Sukowa). Amazed, Walter is forced to question whether she might be his biological daughter.
