17-year-old Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve) is the daughter of the owner of an umbrella shop in Cherbourg, France; 20-year-old Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) is an employee at a car repair shop and lives with his aunt and his aunt's adopted daughter Madeleine (Ellen Farner). Geneviève and Guy are a couple, but their relationship is continually hindered by Geneviève's mother. With the outbreak of the Algerian War, Guy is forced to serve two years in the military. The night before their separation, they become intimate. During the days apart, Geneviève receives few letters from Guy and begins to doubt his sincerity. With her mother's encouragement, she marries a persistent Parisian jeweler, Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), while pregnant. Two years later, after completing his military service, Guy returns to Cherbourg, wanting to rekindle his love with Geneviève, only to find that everything has changed... The film was nominated for the 37th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won the Palme d'Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. All the dialogue in the film is sung, and the score is outstanding.
