This film is based on true historical events and tells the story of one of the most famous rebels in American history: Newton Knight. Knight, a local from Mississippi, defected from the Confederate Army during the Civil War, organized a group of soldiers, and established a country known as the "Free State of Jones" in his hometown. Not only did Knight marry a Black female slave and refuse to return to serve in the Confederate Army, but he also liberated enslaved people in Mississippi, a rarity in America at that time, making him a legendary figure in the local history of Mississippi.
